The fact of the matter is, you can’t control what’s happening in the stock market. You can’t control who gets sick and who doesn’t. You can’t control how long this thing lasts. You can’t control whether or not your work is considered “critical” by your state government.

This was recorded in the height of the COVID-19 crisis. However, the principles apply no matter what uncontrollable circumstance you’re facing.

You have to control your thoughts to be successful in business. My Interior Design Biz CEO™ coaching program can help. Now is the time for you to make the transition from interior designer with a business to CEO of your design firm!

The fact of the matter is, you can’t control what’s happening in the stock market. You can’t control who gets sick and who doesn’t. You can’t control how long this thing lasts. You can’t control whether or not your work is considered “critical” by your state government.

So, let’s just stop obsessing over those things. How would that feel to just NOT worry anymore about those things we can’t control? I’ll tell you how it will feel — it will feel empowering. It will empower you to think about the things you can control. And at the top of that list is your thoughts. You can control your thoughts about this and any other situation. You can either spiral in the negative what-ifs such as what if I don’t have any clients? What if all of my retirement savings is gone? What if I can’t pay my design assistant and I lose her? Do those thoughts feel good? Do they feel empowering … no.

So, how about spiraling in positive what-ifs instead? What if I dedicate 5 hours each week to marketing my business and in a few months have more clients than I can handle? What if all those clients allow me to generate enough revenue that I can fully fund my retirement account again? What if I find a way to keep my assistant busy through this downturn and to pay her appropriately and she stays with me for years to come? What if I dial in my processes and systems so much right now that even when I’m swamped with work, I’ll be able to take Fridays off and take vacations without having to worry that my business will suffer?

Now, do those thoughts feel good, empowering? Yes, they do. And that’s where your thoughts need to be. So, control them because you can.

The other things that you can control are the parts of those positives. You can market the crap out of your business right now. You have control over that. Send out emails, engage with your audience on social media, go old school and send out job site mailers. I recently created a video about marketing through a brought period where I talk about this and shared a freebie of job site mailer samples you can use for your business. I’ll link to it where you’re watching this video.)

You can reassess your goals — or create goals — for the year. And follow my goal-setting process to ensure you set yourself up for success in meeting those goals. (I have a training for this that I will also link to where you’re watching this video.)

Now is a great time to streamline and document your processes. As you plan for the boom to follow this bust, it’s a great time to think about what help you will need as your business grows. Develop your ideal org chart for the business you plan to have in three years. Then you’ll be prepared to hire smart when the time is right.

We are going to come out of this thing. We might all have really bad hair and nails, but we will come out on the other side. So, let’s get ready for it together.
