Here’s a story that has stuck with me for years for two reasons. In the early years of my business, when I still provided marketing services, I was always hustling. I had a full-time job as a magazine editor, and I was launching my marketing business on the side. And I had kids, a husband, dogs, all the things. I was, honestly, a bit overwhelmed all of the time.

Because of this, it felt like I was getting nowhere fast with building my business. I would work all day, take care of the family, do client work at night and on the weekends, and there was no time left for working on growing my tiny side hustle.

Finally, I’d had enough and I literally just started throwing together email content so I could at least be engaging my email list on a weekly basis. I was so excited that I was actually doing it. The marketer marketing her own business — woot-woot!

Then came my first reply. It as a rather snotty remark about a typo in my subject line. Yes, I had a typo. In my haste to just get in front of my audience, I made a mistake. 😯

Well, for probably three full days I carried the weight of that snotty remark. I felt like a failure. I asked myself 1000 times, “Who are you to be trying to start this business?” Imposter syndrome was raging. And then, on day four, I woke up and thought, “Who freaking cares?” I made a mistake (a tiny one at that). The woman who responded with her snotty remark probably could have used some marketing services so she would be busy enough to not concern herself with my tiny typo!

The point is: I was taking action. I was getting shit done to build my business. And, no, it wasn’t perfect, but it was done. And to this day, I subscribe to the belief that done is better than not done striving for perfection. And shortly after I recovered from the blunt force trauma of criticism, I landed two new clients!

So, whatever it is for you, just take some action. Put something out into the world. Make mistakes — it’s OK! You’ll learn from it and do better next time. And maybe someone will call you out, but you can take solace in the fact that you were taking action and they are just not your target audience!
